Leather Care Tips For The Homeowner

Updated: Apr 25

A leather sofa is a great investment, it looks good, feels luxurious, and can last a long time with the right care. Here are a few simple tips to keep your leather looking its best.

1. Wipe it down regularly

Dust and crumbs collect fast. Use a soft, dry cloth once a week to wipe the surface. For deeper cleaning, use a damp cloth (not wet!) with plain water or a mild soap made for leather.

Avoid: baby wipes, vinegar, or household cleaners—they can damage the leather.

2. Keep it out of the sun

Leather can fade or dry out if it sits in direct sunlight too long. Try to place your sofa where the sun won’t hit it directly, or use curtains or blinds to block harsh light during the day.

3. Moisturise the leather

Just like skin, leather needs moisture to stay soft and flexible. Use a leather conditioner every 6 to 12 months. Make sure it’s the right kind for your type of leather.

4. Clean up spills quickly

If you spill something, blot it right away with a clean, dry cloth. Don’t rub—rubbing can spread the stain. For oil-based spills (like food), sprinkle a bit of talcum powder or cornstarch to absorb the grease, then gently brush it off.

5. Watch out for claws and sharp items

Pets, buckles, and even kids' toys can scratch leather. Try to keep sharp objects away, and use a throw or blanket if your pet likes to jump up on the couch.
